- The Condell electro-terminal will be operated by Metropol, the new operator of the RED metropolitan public transport system, and will be powered by Copec Voltex, which will supply energy to 67 buses running on 100% renewable sources, allowing the residents of Renca to use this type of mobility technology for the first time.
- The opening of the other nine electro-terminals powered by Copec Voltex is expected to take place over the coming months, representing a total investment of 28 million dollars.
With the participation of the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz; the Director of Metropolitan Public Transport, Paola Tapia; and the Mayor of Renca, Claudio Castro; Copec and Metropol launched the new Condell electro-terminal, which will supply clean, renewable energy to Santiago's public transport system.
This infrastructure, located in Renca, was designed and built by Copec Voltex, and its operation will be in the hands of Grupo Metropol Chile, one of the main public transport operators in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The new terminal will feature 17 high-power chargers (150kW) that will provide clean energy to 67 electric buses across nine RED routes. It will have an intelligent charge management monitoring system to facilitate daily bus operations, benefiting more than 500,000 people every month across seven districts of the Metropolitan Region: Renca, Independencia, Recoleta, Santiago, Providencia, Lo Espejo, and Conchalí.
Arturo Natho, General Manager of Copec—the company that will power these services—stated, "The inauguration of the Condell electro-terminal marks a new milestone for Copec, as we will be supplying the energy for more than 1,000 electric buses in Greater Santiago, meaning 60% of the public transport electric bus fleet that the city will have in 2023 will be powered by Copec. We are committed to the development and movement of people, companies, and the country, which is why we want to continue promoting initiatives that bring the benefits of electromobility to as many people as possible, improving their quality of life and that of the planet."
With this milestone, the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications and the Metropolitan Public Transport Directorate (DTPM) are moving forward with the commissioning of a total of 13 electro-terminals tendered in 2021, 10 of which will be powered by Copec. This infrastructure is key to the renewal of the RED fleet, as it will allow for the progressive incorporation of a total of 1,100 electric buses into the system, reaching nearly 2,000 units.
New electro-terminals
The opening of nine other electro-terminals is expected to be completed in the coming months, which will also be powered by Copec Voltex, with an approximate investment of 28 million dollars, adding 800 more electric buses to the system.
Among the benefits of the introduction of new electric buses is the positive impact on the environment, as it involves savings of nearly 136,000 tons of CO2.
