FEDEX BEGINS IMPLEMENTATION OF ITS ELECTRIC FLEET IN CHILE

FEDEX INICIA LA IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE SU FLOTA ELÉCTRICA EN CHILE

In addition, the express transport company incorporated tractors with EPA2010 GHG21 engines, the first of their kind in Chile, which use state-of-the-art technology to reduce greenhouse gases.

Chile, July 4, 2023 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, announced the arrival of the first electric vehicles to be integrated into the FedEx Express pickup and delivery fleet in Chile, as part of a comprehensive and systematic plan that will move toward the goal of completing a 100% electric fleet by 2040. The new vehicles will be based at the FedEx Distribution Center in Pudahuel, the largest FedEx Express facility in South America dedicated to small e-commerce package distribution. The electric fleet consists of Maxus eDeliver 3 vans, with a range of more than 200 kilometers, an 85kW electric motor, and a load capacity of up to 1,000 kilograms.

Humberto Lira, Vice President of Operations for FedEx Express in South America, stated, “At FedEx, we continue to work with a commitment to reduce and minimize the impact of our business on the environment, not only in Chile, but around the world.” He added, “In Chile, we have spent more than a decade developing continuous improvement processes and various energy management system and energy efficiency initiatives for land transport, investing in cutting-edge technology in terms of efficiency and in medium- and long-term sustainable transformation solutions, as a commitment to our customers and the care of the planet.”

The FedEx Express Distribution Center in Pudahuel was expanded to 14,000 m2 and has the electrical capacity for the implementation of charging stations, which were installed in partnership with Copec Voltex.

Copec Voltex is also present in Chile through a 1,400-kilometer fast-charging network between Coquimbo and the Araucanía region, to offer a more sustainable and efficient delivery experience to customers.

FedEx Commitment to Sustainability

With more than 210,000 total motorized vehicles in the global FedEx fleet and more than 5,000 facilities worldwide, the company is working to reduce its CO2 emissions, with the goal of achieving global carbon-neutral operations by 2040. Key steps to reach its environmental goals include programs to gradually replace the existing pickup and delivery fleet, expecting that by 2025, 50% of pickup and delivery vehicle purchases will be electric, and by 2030, all pickup and delivery van purchases will be zero-tailpipe emission, all-electric vehicles. In addition, FedEx is seeking greater use of renewable energy and fuels, as well as investing in research to develop nature-based solutions to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere. The recent 2023 ESG report details the company’s progress toward environmental strategies, goals, and initiatives.

In Chile, since 2015, FedEx Express has held ISO 50001 certification, which establishes the requirements for an Energy Management System in order to make continuous and systematic improvements in a company’s energy performance. This is significant, given that FedEx Express has the widest national network and coverage in more than 400 cities in Chile, with more than 500 operational package routes throughout the country. Furthermore, FedEx Express is part of the first generation of companies in the Giro Limpio transport program, and in 2023 it received certification for the fourth consecutive year. This program has recognized the company for its efforts to reduce its carbon emissions and fuel consumption in relation to the cargo transported and the number of kilometers traveled.

Additionally, at the beginning of 2023, FedEx Express brought to Chile the first tractors with engines that comply with EPA 2010 GHG21 standards, exceeding the existing environmental standards in Chile for heavy-duty truck engines. These new trucks feature the latest fuel efficiency technology, with lower emissions than older models. Through these technologies and other initiatives, FedEx Express remains focused on adopting behaviors and practices that improve energy efficiency to help reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
