We spoke with the Head of Copec Voltex about the El Conquistador electro-terminal, recently inaugurated in Maipú, and its design and construction challenges. He also discussed the challenges that lie ahead for charging infrastructure in Chile.
With 15,000 square meters, 57 chargers, and the capacity to simultaneously charge 110 buses, the El Conquistador electro-terminal, located in the Maipú district, recently began operations. It is used by the Red Metropolitana de Movilidad operator, STP, and is one of the largest charging centers on the planet.
"It is the first of its kind in the world; terminals of this type do not exist anywhere else. That alone creates a very significant challenge from the perspective of technical analysis, design, and engineering; the chargers had to be custom-ordered to have those capabilities, with longer cables," explained the Head of Copec Voltex, Francisco Larrondo. In another regard, he commented that the challenges in its construction phase had to do with the fact that the charging terminal was developed while buses were in operation and during the height of the pandemic.
According to the Head of Copec Voltex, each of the 57 chargers is high-power with 150 kW each and two connectors. "The total power is nearly 8.8 MW, which is what one would need to supply a significant portion of the residences in a district like La Reina."
In addition, Larrondo referred to charging infrastructure trends in Chile. "A very ambitious agenda has been carried out in the country, and the truth is that it has been executed well," he noted.
